Are You an Adult Child of Emotionally Immature Parents?

What this is…

This is a term Dr. Lindsay Gibson coined in her groundbreaking book Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. Growing up with an emotionally immature parent means your inner world was often treated as an inconvenience. You learned early to shrink, perform, or disappear — and those adaptations followed you into adulthood. This work is about understanding where those patterns came from and, slowly, loosening their grip.

Who this is for…

You might be in the right place if:

  • You're the "responsible one" who somehow still feels like you're failing

  • Your relationships feel one-sided, but you don't know how to ask for more

  • You feel guilt or anxiety when you put your own needs first

  • You've achieved a lot on the outside and feel hollow on the inside

  • You love your parent and also recognize they hurt you

What we work on…

We'll look at the roles you took on in your family system and how they're showing up in your life now — in your relationships, your work, your sense of self. Using a psychodynamic approach, we go beneath the surface behaviors to the underlying beliefs and relational patterns that drive them. The goal isn't to assign blame. It's to give you a clearer picture of your own story so you can write the next chapter differently.

How to get started…

Working together starts with a complimentary consultation call that lasts about fifteen minutes. It helps me to hear briefly what’s bringing you into therapy at this time. I can then answer any questions you may have and share more about how I work. From there you might decide to schedule a session. The best way to tell if we are a fit is to have a session or few. My wish is for you to find the best therapist for your needs, whether that’s me or someone else and we can discover that together by beginning the process and seeing what unfolds.
